Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education (including Relationships, Sex and Health Education)

We teach PSHE throughout the term and it is primarily taught through PSHE lessons, Religious Education, Collective Worship, Science and PE but we recognise that every area of school life can contribute to RSHE as our school, in its very ethos, mission and nature, operates through positive, human relationships. All that we do adheres to the teaching of the Catholic Church, directives of the Catholic Education Service (CES), and aligns to the DfE statutory requirements (September 2020).

PSHE is an important part of your child's national curriculum learning. At St Mary & ST Joseph's we believe PSHE is a vital part of children’s education. It gives them the tools to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work.  We use a wide range of resources to teach PSHE including The PSHE Association and Ten Ten Resources. These schemes of work allow us to cover a broad range of topics in a variety of ways. PSHE is taught in a range of ways and many elements of it are celebrated throughout different times of the academic year.

Relationships, Sex and Health Education - Ten Ten

The Relationships and Sex Education programme we follow is called Life to the Full, from Ten Ten Resources. This is a Catholic approved programme which covers most of the Relationships and Health Education in our school and is inclusive, approachable and accessible. The Life to the Full programme is based on the structure of ‘A Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’ by the Catholic Education Service. This model curriculum was highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department of Education so we therefore have confidence that the programme will be fit for purpose in supporting the growth and development of your child.
Life to the Full is much more than a series of lessons. It is an entire platform of creative resources that will engage, inform and inspire our children and, indeed, you as parents. This includes interactive video content, story-based activities, employing a wide range of teaching tools, original worship music and an accompanying programme of classroom prayers.

Parents can access the parent portal via.

NHS CAREERS TALK AND FIRST AID - We were so fortunate to have Lianne Robinson, Deputy Chief Nurse, into school to talk to us about how there are 350 jobs available in the NHS and the wide variety on offer. We learnt there are builders, accountants, plumbers, electricians as well as all the medical staff available. Lianne then told us all about CPR and the children got to have a go themselves, they practiced bandaging each other and even listened to their hearts. We all learnt so much from her and really enjoyed the workshop.

OLSJ - Transition Talk - our year 5 & 6 were treated to a talk by some Our Lady & St Johns RC High School pupils. The children watched a video showing all the amazing things the school has to offer and the pupils told them all about the their experiences and the reasons that they love going to high school, in particular the food 🍟 our pupils got to ask them questions and discuss any worries, fears or apprehensions they had about moving to high school and even got to hear from ex SMSJ pupils. Thank you to OLSJ and their wonderful students for taking the time to help our pupils ⭐️
